Can you drink plain water? Do you prefer bottled water? If you can’t stand the taste of plain water, do you flavor your water with something (like a lemon, or maybe a sugar-free drink mix)?

When you’re trying to lose weight, there are so many things you should and should not do to reach your weight loss goals. Keeping track of those “things”, especially at the beginning of your healthy eating plan or when you reach a difficult spot in your journey.

Since I am at a point where I need a little bit of help, I’ve decided it is time to create my own little score card of what I need to do to get on track. It’s easy to build, since I am well aware of some of the bad things I have done lately.

So, here it goes:

Ride the recumbent exercise bike for thirty minutes. Check!

Drink 64 ounces of water (or Crystal Light). Check!

Eat a healthy breakfast. Check!

Eat a healthy mid-morning snack. Check!

Eat a healthy lunch. Check!

Eat a healthy afternoon snack. Check!

Eat a healthy dinner. Check!

Eat a healthy evening snack / dessert. Check!

Avoid all candy and snacks. Check!

Limit amount of coffee. Check!

Those are ten items I can do each day (at least Monday through Friday), and I did all ten of them today! However, it is just one day, and I need to do the same thing for several days to reach my goals.

Reviewing my score card for today and realizing I accomplished everything I set out to do is an amazing feeling! I have had a successful Monday, and I am looking forward to a successful Tuesday.

Do you use a score card or some other system to keep yourself in check? If so, please share your ideas in the comments.

After an intense thirty-minute workout, I got off the bike feeling like I did something really good. I burned some calories then drank some Crystal Light. I took a refreshing shower then continued my day.

Start with a Smart Breakfast

When I sat down in my office after my shower, I started with a nice cup of coffee and a Harvest Nut Bar from NutriSystem. The bar is sweet and nutty. It’s a great compliment to my coffee.

I worked for a little bit longer before I decided to eat the rest of my breakfast. A boiled egg with a little bit of mustard, low-fat mustard and salt & pepper followed. I toasted some rye bread and spread some “smart butter” on it. It was very satisfying.

After I drove to work, I wrapped up breakfast with a banana.

Lunch is a Blur

EatingIntuitively.com is a paid affiliate of Nutrisystem, Inc.

After spending a couple hours at work, I got hungry again. I started working on the rest of the food I brought with me. First to go was the turkey slices with horseradish sauce.

Before long, I had eaten through my BBQ Soy Chips. Still hungry, I ate my NutriSystem Pasta and Beef lunch. I just kept going and ate the vegetables I brought, carrots and green beans, too.

I was officially out of food until dinner.

Stress Eating is Bad

As the afternoon dragged out and the stress mounted, I couldn’t resist the urge for a snack or two.

The first snack was a peanut butter cup three-pack. Yes, I know…bad! Two cups are already plenty of calories, and I had 50% more.

The second snack was a bag of sour cream and onion chips. They were not baked or anything else that would make them a little healthier.

Back on Track with Dinner

I left the office on time. I drove home and ate dinner.

Dinner was a chicken breast sandwich with low sugar ketchup and low fat mayonnaise. A side of broccoli and some barley helped round out dinner. I also had some fresh pineapple.

Since I was still a little hungry, I had a 100-calorie bag of popcorn.

A Smart Dessert

The last meal of the day was a NutriSystem Chocolate Caramel Bar. It’s sweet and satisfying.

I fell into the trap. I told myself I would start my diet again on Monday. I essentially gave myself permission to eat some bad foods before Monday morning arrived.

On Saturday, I had Thai food (Seafood Massaman Curry to be exact). It’s a deliciously-flavored curry with lots of great seafood, avocado, peanuts, potatoes and onions (plus lots of rice).

On Sunday, I had fried catfish and fried shrimp. Honestly, I was disappointed with the food. It has been a while since I’ve had fried food, and it just tasted so greasy. I guess that’s a good thing.

EatingIntuitively.com is a paid affiliate of Nutrisystem, Inc.

I’ll Start My Diet on Tuesday

Today was supposed to be the big day. While I ate that bad food over the weekend, I imagined myself waking up today and following my healthy eating and exercising plan. It was supposed to be a successful day.

When it came time to get on the exercise bike at 6:45am, I turned on the TV instead. Instead of assembling my healthy meals for the day, I did nothing. I stopped at a fast-food restaurant for breakfast, and I went out for Pad Thai at lunch.

Now, I need to focus on eating healthy food and exercising on Tuesday.

Three Simple Goals to Lose Weight

Although I knew I was off course today, I was still able to think about the three simple things I need to do. It shouldn’t be too hard to figure out, because I did this very successfully for several months:

Exercise for 30 minutes on the recumbent bike.

Eat my six NutriSystem Select meals per day.

Write about my daily challenges right here in this blog.

Eating right and exercising is obvious. I need to burn more calories than I consume. Apparently, it is very easy me to consume more calories than I burn, and, thus, gain weight.

Writing for Weight Loss

The third element which I believe has been critical to my success is writing about my quest to lose weight in this blog. It could just as easily be a journal I keep on the nightstand, but I choose to share my journey in a public forum for all to read. I hope it will help others trying to lose weight like me.

So, in addition to eating right and exercising everyday, I need to commit to writing this blog everyday. It keeps me focused on my goal to get under 200 pounds. It makes me face my failures, and, hopefully, figure out a way to get past them.

What Are Your Daily Goals?

What goals do you have each day to make sure you are living well? Even if you don’t need to lose weight, there might be some things you do everyday to make sure you stay on track with your weight.

Heck, your goal might be to eat healthy as a vegetarian. You might be focused on the amount of fiber you consume each day. Muscle definition might be your major motivation.

Whatever it is, please click on “Leave A Comment” and share what you do everyday to move yourself toward a healthier body.
